OH. EMM. GEE! It’s FINALLY summer, #Cravers! Summer is my absolute FAVORITE season, not just because my birthday is in the summer but summer means warm weather, beach trips and long sunny days. Anyone else feel more productive in the summer because there is more daylight? I know I do.
For June, I was really craving Mediterranean food, more specifically, hummus. Ashley was also craving hummus. So I did a quick Yelp search and found Village Hummus, we were both pretty excited to try this place. For this post I am going to let Ashley start off with her review, so without further ado, here’s Ashley.
To kick start our favorite season, Kita and I have taken a trip to the Mediterranean and decided to visit a local restaurant called Village Hummus here in San Mateo and let me tell you, this is definitely my new go-to hummus shop! I ordered the hummus plate with beef and it was delightfully creamy, fresh, bursting with flavor, and wonderfully delicious! Paired with the warm pita bread and side veggies, it was the perfect snack! Definitely very filling as well! I will absolutely be coming back and would recommend this place for all of your hummus pick-me ups!
OK #Cravers, Kita here! Let me start off by saying that just 8 years ago, I did not like hummus even a little bit, I worked at a vegan cafe at the time called Cafe Indigo in Concord, NH and we had a house-made hummus, I would force myself to eat this everyday until I eventually liked it. Hummus is now one of my favorite snacks! I found Village Hummus on Yelp, it’s a small shop located in San Mateo. You walk in the restaurant and the space itself can make anyone a skeptic of the food. Don’t get me wrong it was clean and didn't scream “health code violations here!” but it wasn’t a super inviting location. It was small with very little seating. It is definitely more of a take-out place, however we chose to eat our food there. We sat at a high top counter in the corner, it was perfect for us. I had the Classic Hummus Plate, without the lemon relish (I can’t eat peppers). They were very accommodating and just drizzled my plate with olive oil and lemon juice. The portion was very large, the hummus was topped with whole garbanzo beans and it was accompanied by warm pita bread and pickles and I got a Coca-Cola to drink. I tried the hummus on its own first and let me just say the description that Village Hummus gives on its website for its creamy hummus is spot on. This was the creamiest hummus I have ever tasted in my entire life. It was so smooth and delicious I could not get enough. Dipping the pita bread in and getting some of the whole garbanzo beans with the hummus was a nice textural delight. It wasn’t super garlic-y like some hummus can be, it was refreshing and filling. I didn’t even eat a quarter of what was on my plate! This one, $8.00 meal lasted me for lunch the next THREE days! I did have to buy some more pita bread, as that only lasted for one more meal, that was literally the only downside to the entire experience, not enough pita bread. Overall this place was fantastic! I’ll end my review it here, it got a little long, sorry! 😌
I think it’s safe to say that both Ashley and myself will be returning to Village Hummus. I will definitely be picking up a hummus plate to go next time I am in San Mateo. There’s a good chance I will do this every time I am in the area. If you have not tried Village Hummus, please go do it now, you will not regret it! So affordable, delicious, filling, how could you not love this place and want to go back again and again?
I am looking forward to our July dinner (steak!). This dinner will be in celebration of my birthday, which is at the beginning of August. We know what, we just don’t know where. Send us your location suggestions! Just click the “what are you craving?” tab under the home button on the upper left hand side of our website. That will take you directly to an email, how cool is that? Send us your suggestions and for August, let us know, What are you Craving?
